WALTHER MODEL
(1891 - 1945) German field marshal who led German armies against fierce Russian resistance at Moscow and Kursk, threw back Montgomery's attack at Arnhem, and killed himself following his defeat in the Ruhr Pocket. Superb content war-date T.L.S. "Model" in indelible purple pencil, 1p. large 4to., "Head Quarters Army Group North Ukraine", July 16, 1944 to Dr. Theodor Morell, Hitler's personal physician who also provided medical advice and medication to the Wehrmacht. Desperately trying to hold his ground following the loss of Minsk and the inexorable advance of the Red Army, Model seeks Morell's specially formulated amphetamines for his men. Morell had had success in doping Hitler with the same medication. In part: "...Thank you very much for...your help in procuring the additional vitamin preparations for our troops. As agreed upon, I had made arrangements to dispense large doses of Vitamultin – 232,000 packets – to the First Panzer Division at the beginning of April. Physicians at the military hospitals were in charge of administering the Vitamultin, a preparation the troops actually seemed to like taking...In order to take advantage of all possible options to fully restore the troops' combat readiness, special food rations were also made available, in addition...of the steps taken, all served equally well to achieve the intended outcome. It is planned that for future major combat situations, part of the troops will continue receiving the fortification tablets provided by you...". THEODOR MORELL (1886 - 1948) Hitler's personal physician from 1937- 1945. Morell is said to have prescribed strychnine, pervitin and a variety of dubious drugs to Hitler during these years. After the war Morell presented himself as a resistance fighter and his fortune, much of which was made in the sale of "Vitamultin", remained untouched.
