Description:

WALTER MODEL AND TWO OTHER GERMAN GENERALS
WALTER MODEL (1891 - 1945) German field marshal who led German armies against fierce Russian resistance at Moscow and Kursk, threw back Montgomery's attack at Arnhem, and killed himself following his defeat in the Ruhr Pocket. rare war-date partial D.S., 2pp. large 4to. [Ukraine], Apr. 7, 1944. Model signs a recommendation for the award of the German Cross in Silver to a Hauptmann Krause, apparently attached to the 4th Panzerarmee and whom it appears had made valiant efforts to free up a supply road. Also endorsed approved by: ERHARD RAUS (1889-1956), an Austrian general who commanded the 6th Panzer Division during the early years of the war on the Eastern Front before taking army and army group commands; ARTHUR HAUFFE (1892–1944), German general who commanded the XIII Army Corps and a recipient of the Knight's Cross; and HEINZE LANGE (1917–2006), Luftwaffe officer and pilot who commanded fighter wing Jagdgeschwader 51. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross. Missing the first page of the document, and a long, clean tear from the bottom margin repaired with archival tape, still very good.
