WALTER KUNTZE
(1883 – 1960) German general and war criminal, commander of the 12th Army. Kuntze was responsible for the execution of men and teenage boys in the Kragujevac massacre, when Serbian civilians were murdered in reprisal for an attack on German troops, at the ratio of one hundred Serbs for every German soldier killed. Tried and sentenced to 21 years, released in 1953. Rare A.L.S. 'Walter' also signed 'Walter Kunze' in the return address and 'Kunze' in address area, 1p. 6 x 9 in., Island Farm POW Camp, Wales, June 27, 1947, only eight days before the start of the 'Hostage Trials' in Nuremberg. In small part: '...Today is Saturday and we are off on the afternoon...when I woke and washed myself a little bit, it was already five o'clock...do you remember how it used to be at home like this? It will likely never be like that again...Don't worry that I will be coming home later because I am in this camp...we are being released according to a specific plan...the terrible thing is that you don't know who's next...'. Fine.
