Description:

WALTER KOCH
(1910-1943) German commander of the Fallschirmjager, the paratrooper division of the Luftwaffe, who received the Iron Cross award for his actions during the Battle of Fort Eben-Email. Died under mysterious circumstances after openly criticizing Adolf Hitler's 'Commando Order.' Rare vintage signed postcard, 4 x 6 in., a printed drawing originally by artist Wolfgang Willrich, depicting Koch in a chest up pose in uniform with a bandaged head. Signed 'Koch' on the front in blue indelible pencil. Accompanied by another unsigned postcard featuring a printed illustration of Koch in uniform. Fine condition. The 'Commando Order' issued on October 18, 1942 called for the execution of all Allied commandos captured in Europe or North Africa. Koch, who was commanding forces in North Africa, refused to follow the order on account of it going against the laws of war. After suffering a wound to the head he was sent back to Germany in order to convalesce. During this time, he was involved in a car accident and died from injuries sustained, yet many in his regiment believed it was not an accident and but rather he was killed for his outspoken criticism.
