WALTER HINTON'S PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM
WALTER HINTON (1888-1981) Early American aviator who founded the Aviation institute of U.S.A., most famous for completing the first ever transatlantic flight in 1919 nine years before Charles Lindberg. Close friend of the Wright brothers. Impressive photograph album once belonging to Walter Hinton containing over 160 original press, postcard, and other photographs of a wide variety of early fliers, aircraft, zeppelins, etc. Among those shown are aviators Charles Lindbergh, Douglas Corrigan, Richard E. Byrd and some of his expedition participants, C. M. Olmstead, Elinor Smith, Eddie Rickenbacker, Douglas Campbell, Katherine Stinson, Lincoln Beachey, Roald Amundsen, and many others unidentified by us. Other images include all types of aircraft, for example: a Wright Flyer, the aircraft used for Byrd's Antarctic Expedition, the NC-3 and NC-4, Spads and other military aircraft, Avia B.H. (about six different variations), gliders, zeppelins, and more. Other photos include aerial images, barnstormers, French military airfields, etc. WITH: a 'Diploma of Honor' given to Hinton, July 9, 1919, signed in facsimile by Robert Peary and Augustus Post; a partial A.L. (unsigned) by Hinton; and a quantity of Hinton's unused letterhead. Overall, very good. A fine collection of rare photographs.
