Description:

WALT WHITMAN
(1819 - 1892) American poet whose volume of verse Leaves of Grass was initially rejected by the public and cost him his job in the federal government. It was only in his later years that his genius became recognized world-wide. S.P. 4 1/2" x 5 3/4" b/w, a well-known image of the great poet seated at a writing desk with his head resting upon his hand, boldly signed at bottom: "Walt Whitman born May 31 1819". A repaired tear and glue stains affect the image somewhat at left, and some marginal flaws, but these would easily mat-out still leaving a fully acceptable signed image. Estimated accordingly.
