Description:

Hilarious original pencil sketch by Walt Disney Studios artist JOE WITZERMAN, 8" x 12" (sight), a depiction of Donald Duck slouched in an armchair with a pilot's cap by his side, well-soused off four bottles of "Old Hijax 100" whiskey. Raising his glass, Donald quips: "Friendly skies my ass... if ya don't like the service, try the bus!" Passing behind him, Minnie Mouse remarks: "Pilots have such a nice way with words!" Witzerman signs in pencil at the right edge, adding his execution of the famous Walt Disney Studios "signature", and the inscription: "Thanks for the kindness - love ya all!" The sketch is undated and the recipient is not named, but it was likely given as a gift to an airline pilot in the immediate post-World War II era. Biographical details regarding Witzerman are scant, but he appears to have been hired by Disney specifically to produce artwork featuring Disney characters for the U.S. armed forces during World War II. As demonstrated in this example, his work tended to strike a more "adult" tone than typical Disney fare. Matted in forest green and shrink-wrapped, shows a small tear to the right edge not affecting the image or inscription, else very good to fine.
