Description:

A most unusual Third Reich relic, a heavy bronze wall sconce, approx. 20 1/2" x 9 ¾" x 4 ¾", designed for and likely taken as a souvenir from the residence of Martin Bormann at Obersalzberg. The piece consists of a 6" dia. concave dish with a large spike at center to secure a candle, attached to an elongated triangular arm containing a rounded "A" motif. The end of the arm is in turn bolted to a 5" x 10" bronze plate, with mounting holes at each corner. The entire piece shows a hammered texture, and the candle dish retains some wax drippings. The sconce is accompanied by an original proposal drawing, 19" x 12 ¼", entitled "Entwurf - Verwaltung Obersalzberg 1938 Haus Bormann" (""Design - Administration Obersalzberg 1938 Bormann House") and featuring a watercolor depiction of the sconce described above, minus the mounting plate. The drawing is stamped "Verwaltung Obersalzberg - Reichsleiter Martin Bormann " Fernruf: Berchtesgaden 2280" at bottom left, with the signatures and printed names of two designers, a Dr. Vogel and a Beyer. Shows slight surface soiling, else very good. Two pieces.
