56. WILLIAM H. T. WALKER (1816-1864) Confederate major general who commanded a brigade at Pensacola. Walker, a much admired leader, was killed in action before Atlanta. Rare war-date L.S. "W. H. T. Walker Brig. Genl.", 2pp. 4to., "Head Qu 3d Brigade Camp Walker", January 4, 1862 to Adjutant General H. C. Wayne dealing with thorny personnel issues. In part: "I to day orgaised [sic] Col Harris' Regt An election was held Col Harris was unanimously elected Col. Capt. E. V. Sharpe was elected Lt. Col...The enemy having landed near us in Carolina and a speedy organisation [sic] being absolutely necessary I referred the whole matter to Genl. [Stonewall] Jackson. He ordered that our company...be put into Harris' Regt and an election ordered immediately. In the plan of Moore who wanted to join Harris' Reg...was substituted Capt. Harris' company who wanted to join Wrights...was put in his place. It was the only possible way to form the Regiments for Harris... ordered him from the Altamatia[?] at least ten days ago [but] has not yet arrived...I am thus explicit for I have tried to pleas[e] all hand and at last find it impossible. Suffice it to say that both Genl. Jackson & myself [are] both anxious to make the Brigade efficient. [I] have done what is considered the exigencies of the occupation required and I trust it will meet with the approbation of the Commander in Chief..."
