Description:

Fine example of a Waffen SS officer's visor cap, constructed of "field-grey" wool with a black velvet band, the edges of the band and the crown each fitted with white piping. The center of the band is fitted with a shell metal SS "totenkopf" ("death's head") insignia, with a black metal grommet vent visible underneath. Unusually, the peak of the cap is fitted with a Wehrmacht-style insignia of aluminum bullion wire embroidered on a dark green wool backing, its presence likely attributable to late-war shortages or personal taste. A braided aluminum bullion chin strap is affixed over the black vulcanized fiber visor by a pebbled metal button on each side. The interior of the cap is fitted with a taupe faux-leather sweatband, printed with the maker's name "Erel" in silver, with a gold rayon lining fitted with a celluloid sweat shield at center, protecting a second printed silver label again giving the maker's name "Erel" and the brand "Sonderklasse" ("special class"). The sweatband shows several tears throughout, some showing period repairs with fabric tape and later cello tape repairs within, with additional minor soiling commensurate with wear to the lining and exterior, else very good.
