Description:

WAFFEN SS M40 COMBAT HELMET WITH CAMOUFLAGE COVER
A textbook example of a single-decal Waffen-SS M40 combat helmet, with appropriate field-gray finish inside and out. The right-hand side of the helmet displays a yellow-hued Quist SS runes decal. The initial and size number'Q66' is heat-stamped inside the left-hand skirt, identifying the maker as Quist. The batch number ‘51422' is heat-stamped inside the rear skirt. The owner's name has been applied inside the rear skirt in white paint, and appears as ‘Andre R., and indicates this most likely belonged to a Belgian volunteer in the Wallonie Division. The light brown leather liner is size-stamped ‘58' and retains its adjustment cord. The black-finished brown leather chinstrap is present and intact. The exterior paint shows expected scratches and chips, with a more notable 4 in.-long scuff and two deep scratches to the left-hand side of the dome, with a few spots of oxidation where the underlying metal is exposed, while the leather fittings show entirely appropriate wear and discoloration. In very good condition overall. The helmet is accompanied by its very rare Waffen-SS reversible helmet cover, a second model with sewn-on foliage loops, constructed from very thin fabric and bearing ‘oakleaf' pattern camouflage, with spring colors on the outside and fall within. The edges are fitted with three anodized metal spring clips, with the panels assembled with grey-brown thread, double-stitched and showing the proper variations in the number of stitches per inch. The clips show some abrasive wear at their bottoms from the helmet and cover having been run repeatedly placed on concrete, stone, or other hard surfaces. The cover also shows a 4.5 in. hand-repaired tear above the right-hand clip, an approx. 1 cm. square hole at front right, and a second at the crown, with a 1 in. tear over the lip at front and additional pinholes throughout, otherwise in very good condition overall. The cover shows every sign of having been with this helmet throughout its life, particularly wear patterns to the helmet's finish that correspond to wear holes in the fabric covering, as well as marks corresponding to the spring clips on the interior rolled rim of the helmet. A nearly impossible matched combination to locate this far past the end of the war. Excellent.
