Description:

WAFFEN-SS KNIGHT CROSS WITH OAK LEAVES AND SWORDS RECIPIENTS REPORT ON ONE OF THEIR OWN
A fine SS personnel recommendation, 2pp. large 4to., Munich, Jan. 6, 1938 in which future Waffen-SS Gen. FELIX STEINER and Waffen-SS Col. Gen. PAUL HAUSER recommend the promotion of future Waffen-SS Gen. Willi Bittrich to the rank of obersturmbannfuhrer. All three men would be awarded the Knights Cross with Swords and Diamonds. The first part of the document sets forth general information on Bittrich, including his party number, SS number, ranks held, etc. Beneath, Steiner hand-writes his commentary about Bittrich, noting his race is "Nordic-Dinaric...[and] zestful, cheerful and impulsive...healthy human understanding...well considered troop leader...follows through on tasks...resolute National Socialist...consistently top performance...fully trained commander of operations for the SS F 7...". Steiner boldly signs as commander of the SS Deutschland Division. On Jan. 11 Paul Hausser adds two lines and signs in indelible pencil: "Statement of the superior service agency Approved - even though 2 years since his last promotion are not yet up! ". Bittrich himself would command the Deutschland Division in the Polish Campaign. Fine condition.
