War-date A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Cedar [NY], Nov. 10, 1863, to J. Gillett, requesting assistance in securing the appointment of a second lieutenant. In part: "...The accompanying paper [not present] asking the appointment of Geo. Thompson as 2nd Lieutenant is handed to me by Mrs. Whippley...Cannot you with Judge Dennis' letter & my own herewith enclosed press this matter on the Governor's attention? The young man has a family suffering from inadequate support. While he, a gentleman of attention & ability, is fighting the battles of his Country for inadequate pay & in a position subordinate to his ability & deserts...". Fine condition. $200-300
