(1750s-1835) American military officer who served in both the War for Independence as well as the War of 1812, later a politician and landowner. At the time of his death in 1835 it is believed that he was the wealthiest land and slave owner in the country. A.L.S. 'W. Hampton', 2pp. 4to., Baton Rouge, April 2, 1812, to ‘Captain Carson', commanding officer at Fort Stoddart referencing the issue of smuggling. In part: 'The practice of smuggling, and the open continuation and defiance of the laws of the United States have grown to greater heights in most of the lands from the nation[?] of Mexico into the territories of Orleans and East Florida as to require in extraordinary cases aid of the military authority...You will be pleased to govern yourself according to views which are to be regarded as originally from the government.' Shipping

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
