Description:

WADE HAMPTON
(1819 - 1902) Confederate lieutenant general of cavalry whose daring exploits at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Petersburg won him fame in both North and South. Fine war-date manuscript D.S. 1p. oblong 4to., Sept. 12, 1861, a requisition order on usual blue letterhead, for provisions for Capt. William K. Bachman's Co. B. Artillery Battalion, Hampston's Legion, for 101 soldiers for 21 days from Aug. 23, 1861 to Sept. 12, 1861. In part: "...I certify that I have carefully compared the above extract with the original return now in my possession...", and find that the rations, which include beef, bacon, hard head, soap, etc. are correct. Hampton signs at bottom: "Wade Hampton Col. Co.". Co. B. was mustered into the Confederate service on Aug. 22, 1861, the day before this large requisition of rations was issued. At the time, they were camped at Hampstead Hall near Charleston, and a little over two weeks later arrived at Manassas. Bachman's regiment saw action at the Seven Days Battles, Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and other major campaigns. A few small tears at top edge costs a bit of text, otherwise very good condition.
