(1827-1916) American Presbyterian missionary to China, served as interpreter during the negotiations for the Treaty of Tientsin in 1858. Signature on a 12mo sheet of paper, dated March 23, 1906 at Shanghai, to a Miss Blodgett, also executing lines from a Chinese poem in English and Chinese characters, in full: "A speck upon your ivory form/You soon may grind away/But stains upon the heart or tongue/Remain alas! for aye". Folds, else very good.
