Description:

(1821 - 1862) Union private with the 11th Illinois who rose through the ranks to become a brigadier general after exhibiting great bravery at Fort Donelson. At Shiloh, he managed to withstand six hours of assaults by the Confederates, directly next to the Sunken Road. When his division was finally surrounded, he ordered a withdrawal and many escaped, but he was wounded and only later found barely alive on the battlefield by his troops. He died three days later at Grant's headquarters, Grant calling him one of the finest generals he had ever known. Very rare war-date signed book as 'Col. W. H. L. Wallace 11th Reg. Ill. Vol.', appropriately a copy of Winfield Scott's 'Infantry Tactics Vol. I' (New York: Harper & Brother), 1861. 202pp. 12mo. with multiple appendices and fold-out maps, etc., Front cover barely remaining attached, signed page and most contents remain very good. A great rarity.
