Description:

VYACHESLAV MOLOTOV
(1890 - 1986) Bolshevik politician and diplomat, ranked second in Soviet leadership for most of the 1930s under Stalin. In this capacity he signed the German Soviet Non-Aggression Pact in 1939 (also called the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact). Eponym for the ‘Molotov cocktail.' Very rare D.S., 4pp. 12mo., [Switzerland], May 28, 1954, a lunch menu signed by Molotov at the top of the second page. Two additional notes or signatures are present, undeciphered. Fine condition. Molotov was in Switzerland at the time attending the Geneva Conference which was intended to settle outstanding issues resulting from the Korean War and the First Indochina War and involved several nations. It took from 26 April to 20 July 1954 for agreements to be reached. The Geneva Accords that dealt with the dismantling of French Indochina proved to have long-lasting repercussions. The crumbling of the French colonial empire in Southeast Asia led to the formation of the states of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), the State of Vietnam (precursor of the future Republic of Vietnam, or South Vietnam), the Kingdom of Cambodia, and the Kingdom of Laos.
