598. PAUL VON HINDENBURG (1847 - 1934) German general and politician, crushed the Russians at Tannenburg and in Poland, forced to yield the Chancellor's office to Hitler in 1933. Choice manuscript L.S. "von Hindenburg" as German Reich President" in German, 2pp., folio, Neudeck, Aug. 18, 1932, countersigned by his Minister "Baron von Neurath". During his early months as President of Germany, von Hindenburg sends a rare Letter of State to "His Excellency, the President of the Dominican Republic" [Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina]. Addressing Trujillo as "Mr. President", in part: "I have the honor of informing Your Excellency that I have decided to recall from his post the Extraordinary Ambassador and authorized Minister Dr. Zietelmann. I venture to hope that he has succeeded in securing your trust and that he has accomplished his mission satisfactorily so that you will bid him farewell with benevolence. I shall strive to find a successor for him as soon as possible...". In very good condition. At the time of this letter, Trujillo had recently come into power for the first time as President of Cuba, and would serve until 1938. He again seized the presidency in 1942, reigning ruthlessly until 1952 when he engineered the election of his brother Hector as the titular president. With large original envelope [foxed] bearing huge white paper seal of the German Reich President. Very good. $400 - 500
