Description:

VISOR CAP FROM VON RUNDSTEDT STAFF MEMBER
A great piece of headgear, a German flak artillery NCO's visor cap purportedly captured from a member of the staff of Field Marshall GERD VON RUNDSTEDT (1875-1953) when the latter was captured on May 1, 1945. The cap is in excellent condition. It bears a field gray gabardine wool body with dark green side bands and red piping. A proper eagle and aluminum wreath and cockade are affixed at the front. The black leather chin strap is completely intact and undamaged, though just a little bit loose. The vulkanfibre checkered visor is fine, bearing only a tiny chip at the upper front. Within, the lining is very good, but the celluloid guard is gone. Leather sweatband shows some stains, as expected, and has a small tear. Marked size '56'. The cap was captured by PFC Joseph H. Rose of HQ Company, 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Div. who also was billeted at the home of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler (see other lots in this sale). In a ca. 1980 typed note , Rose notes the cap was: '...taken from a member of Generalfeldmarschall Von Rundstedt's staff, on the night they were captured at Bad Tolz, Baveria [sic], on May 1st. 1945. He was captured by Lt. Joe Burke, and a small patrol...' Sold with a letter of provenance from Rose's niece, a copy of Rose's Enlisted Record and Report of Separation, and a copy of a 1989 newspaper article showing Rose and the cap in a case behind him.
