Description:

VIRGINIA WOOLF
(1882 - 1941) American author who wrote in the "stream of consciousness" style, perfected in To the Lighthouse, Orlando and Between the Acts. Fine content T.L.S. "Virginia Woolf", 1p. 8vo., London, Oct. 14, 1927, to H. G. Leach, in part: "...I am much pleased that you like the story, and I hope that it will not annoy your readers too much. I get very kind letters now and then about The New Dress, and that was more annoying, I should say, than this. But I am not as you suggest 'satisfied with the story as it is.' The criticism you enclose [not present] has a good deal of point to it. It is difficult to alter one [sic] things once they are written, but if you would be so good as to send me a proof...I would try if I cannot meet my critics' objections...". Woolf published The New Dress in a collection of short stories 1924. In it, the reader witnesses the tortured thoughts of the wife of a petty government official as she attends a party hosted by Mrs. Clarissa Dalloway. Replete with the traditional Woolfian themes of ontological dissipation, longing for substantive human contact, and obsession with, and simultaneous critique of, prevailing social conventions and mores, The New Dress is widely considered the precursor - temporally as well as stylistically - to Mrs. Dalloway, published one year later in 1925. Grease-pencil underline beneath Woolf's purple-ink signature, else fine condition.
