Description:

VIRGINIA SLAVES ARE "INSOLENT", AND THREATEN TO MARRY WHITES
Startling content A.L.S. delivered "By [slave] Daniel" to Judge Fleming Saunders in Flat Creek, Va., 3pp. 4to., Lynchburg, Va., Jan. 14, 1850. Richard K. Galle. In small part: "...of all the places in the Union of which I have any knowledge, this is the very worst for negroes. The intimacy - the apparent equality between them and the masses of the whites; - especially for free intercourse...tend to the destruction of everything like subordination...It is next to impossible to keep servants in order...a fellow belonging to Mr. W. Claiborn, attempted twice to kill a white man, and very nearly succeeded...A fortunate blow with a pocket knife alone saved the life of the white, by killing instantly the negro, who was upon him...if this wretched system of half slavery and half freedom be allowed to pass unrestrained, I know not what to expect...a young girl I had brought down from the mountains, had declared that she meant to have a white man for a husband...insolence...finally terminated in her positive refusal to do what her mistress ordered...she ...would not live us, but decided to be sold to a Trader. I ought to have given her a hundred lashes...In a week or two, however, she appeared in a well-figured silk dress and boasted she had succeeded, and was a white man''s wife. To such a state have we come!...Two men of our house servants have since expressed the same wish to be sold...I am determined to give them the lash...[and] put them under the overseer of the Farm..." Additional content concerns family matters, iron manufacturing, etc. The integral address leaf indicated the letter was carried by slave to the recipient. Seal tear affects a couple of words, else very good.
