VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE DIPLOMA
A diploma issued by the prestigious Virginia Military Institute, 1p. folio, Richmond, July 4, 1875, issued to James William Garnett and signed by several prominent former Confederate generals and officers, including: JOHN LETCHER (1813-1884), Confederate Governor of Virginia who was succeeded by ‘Extra Billy' Smith and imprisoned for several months following the South's surrender, JAMES L. KEMPER (1823-1895) Confederate brigadier general who fought at 1st Bull Run, Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg, RICHARD L. T. BEALE (1819-1893) Confederate brigadier general and U.S. Congressman, JOHN M. BROOKE (1826-1906), American sailor and engineer who was instrumental in the creation of the transatlantic cables, WILLIAM M. PATTON (1845-1905), an ancestor of George S. Patton of World War II fame, and other prominent staff members and government officials. The diploma is wrapped in the original paper seal of the Virginia Military Institute and the State of Virginia, also with the original tubular steel case. Fine.
