Description:

VINTAGE WINCHESTER MODEL 70 ALASKAN .375 H&H MAGNUM
The classic Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 'Alaskan' hunting rifle, known as the 'rifleman's rifle', is being offered in the rare .375 H&H Magnum caliber, and features a Mauser type action. Winchester Repeating Firearms produced four different rifles under the Model 70 designation, with all four still in circulation. The first Winchester Model 70 series is the legendary pre-64 Model 70 Type I, and it cemented Winchester's reputation with hunters with a new controlled round feeding system upon its introduction in 1936. The post-64 Model 70's nearly destroyed Winchester's credibility due to changes in the round feeding system, and other modifications designed to lower manufacturing costs which started in 1964. This is the highly desirable 'Pre-64' Type III example, marketed as the 'Alaskan', and features a beautiful 25 in. polished blued barrel, exclusive to the 'Alaskan' model. It is well balanced and weighs 8.5 lbs., lighter and more maneuverable than its counterpart, the Model 70 'Safari'. Barrel is marked on the left side, forward of receiver: 'MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA_WINCHESTER_MODEL 70- 375 MAGNUM' sitting above a second line: '-WINCHESTER- PROOF STEEL -TRADE MARK-'. The barrel is also marked with one visible Winchester oval proof mark, the 'WP' in an oval on the left side, near where barrel meets receiver, the receiver is also marked with the same Winchester oval proof mark adjacent to the barrel proof. Receiver has a tapered oval receiver tang, and a non-recessed rear bridge, which is drilled and tapped for a scope. Additionally the receiver shows serial number '154476', indicating it is Type III-1 Model 70 manufactured relatively early in the series. Trigger assembly, bolt assembly ( electropen serial no. 154476), all show in excellent bluing with slight wear in areas, with the most wear to blued finish of the box magazine floor. The forged steel receiver and bolt handle are both in near perfect matte blued finish, and shows considerable wear to finish of bolt handle. The jeweled bolt features the dog-leg shaped 3-position safety lever, dual recoil lugs, and two steel reinforcing crossbolts, for harnessing until ejection, the powerful .375 H&H round. Stock is a satin finished black walnut Monte Carlo style with cross-cut checkering accents, stock fully in excellent condition with nearly no imperfections, except for two small dings to the lower side of pistol grip, and some wear to the finish of the cross-cut portion of the pistol grip. Stock butt is finished with the trade mark red-brown Winchester branded recoil pad and fitted with two blued swivel sling fittings. Original rear sights have been removed to make way for the quick detach Griffin & Howe mount marked 'GRIFFIN AND HOWE INC NEW YORK', and inset with a 4X Redfield scope with clear optics. Original rear peep site present, as well as hooded pin sight to front of barrel. This iconic big game rifle is considerably more powerful in performance than the 30-06. Rarely is a gun of this age available, or in such fine condition. Overall, excellent plus.
