Description:

A matchless presentation photograph album prepared by the S.A. and undoubtedly presented to its commander VIKTOR LUTZE at the end of 1942. The 13 ½" x 13" album is clearly a professionally-made custom piece. The covers are in widely-woven linen with the spine covered in brown leather with four raised hubs. The spine is also embossed "1942" in gold lettering near the top. A matching brown leather tab and sleeve are used to strap the album closed. The first page of the presentation bears a full-page calligraphic introduction: "This portfolio should be a review of the best photos of the year, which have also received the greatest attention in the press. The chief of staff was able to personally supervise the fine support of the S.A. at the front and in his homeland." Within are 82 excellent, original photographs of S.A. leaders (including Lutze) and important events, as chronicled by Lutze's chief photo editor, Otto Wegner. Almost every photograph (average size 5" x 7") bears a calligraphic caption, and most are dated. Subjects include: meetings with the German and foreign press; an S.A. meeting in Weimar; state funeral for Gauleiter Rover in Berlin; swearing-in of new S.A. members; armed S.A. men drilling in the field; S.A. men on the Eastern Front; a candid of Hitler at the Wolf's Lair; S.A. men at the front on the Volkhov and at the ruins of the Peterhof Palace; meeting in the field with Field Marshal Kuchler; Hitler in his Junkers; travels through Pomerania; official greeting of Italian general Enzo Galbiati and the Regiment "Tagliamento" on the Eastern Front; a meeting of gruppenfuhrers at Coburg; awarding medals; visiting miners; a ceremony at the Feldherrnhalle; with the last image a large photo of a member of the Feldherrnhalle SA-Panzergrenadier Division. Covers are soiled and worn a bit, but the contents are in fine condition. In January 1939, the role of the S.A. was officially established as a training school for the armed forces with the establishment of the SA Wehrmannschaften (SA Military Units). Later, the S.A. commenced forming a combat division on similar lines to the Waffen-SS, the result being the creation of the Feldherrnhalle SA-Panzergrenadier Division, as shown in this album.
