Description:

VIKTOR LINNARZ (1894 - 1979) German major general. On 21 July 1944 he arrested Field Marshal Erwin von Witzleben following his involvement in the 20 July plot on Hitler's life. Later commander of the 26th Panzer-Division in Italy from 1 March 1945 until 8 May 1945. Fine content T.L.S., 2pp. 4to., [n.p.], July 27, 1944, a hastily-signed probable retained copy of an urgent message sent to Field Marshal FERDINAND SCHORNER mention the arrest of Witzleben. In part: "...On 20-7 we were given bad news and an unfriendly surprise, communications were cut and for a short time we didn't know what was happening. For security purposes I put the barracks on alert...to prevent a potential capture. On 21st I got a phone call from GM Witzleben who I thought was already dead...I thought it was a joke...An hour later I received an order from GFM Keitel that I was to personally arrest him and bring him to Prinz Albrecht Strasse and turn him over...wish you all the best considering your current situation in the war..." File holes, else very good. With translation. In the weeks after the July 20, 1944 attempt on Hitler's life, arch-Nazi SchÃrner opened staff meetings by asking: "How many men did you hang today?"
