Description:

'VIETNOPOLY'
An original Vietnam War-theme game satirically titled ‘Vietnopoly', published in 1966 by ‘Froth', the Penn State student humor magazine. It features a 22" x 17" poster of a map of Vietnam printed in green ink with a board drawn on top, and list of rules, illustrations, places for game cards, and thematic compass rose in the margins. Included are three original round paper game pieces dubbed ‘Sergeant', ‘Private' and ‘Lieutenant', along with instructional cards titled ‘H. Q. Card' (28), ‘Terror Card' (26) and ‘Combat Cards' (22). The cards dictate ludicrous and darkly humorous instructions such as: ‘You show great heroism, even sustaining a toe injury, in stopping a V. C. Convoy, because you heard it was full of booze. This turns out to be true. The booze is confiscated by your senior officers. You are given a purple heart. Move two spaces'; ‘Under fire, you jump into what you think is a foxhole. It turns out to be a manhole. You are driven out by an angry fox. Lose one turn'; ‘You siphon a gallon of gasoline from your sergeant's jeep and sell it to a Buddhist monk for 20 piasters. Move ahead two spaces'; and ‘You are captured by the Viet Cong and brainwashed. Go home and protest with Commie pinko ratbastards'. According to the Penn State University Library: ‘Froth...was first published in 1910. Froth featured creative writing and art by students on humorous topics interesting to their fellow students. Generally evocative of its times, the post-World War II Froth reflected the witty and urbane influence of New Yorker, by the 1960s, the social movements of the era had turned the subject matter significantly more radical, and as a result the magazine was suspended and banned 1962-1965. Although Froth returned in late 1965, the magazine was never quite as vibrant, and the last issue was published in 1982.' Very good condition.
