Description:

(1903-1966) Head of the Medical and Sanitary Management of the Kremlin, later accused of conspiring to poison Soviet leaders in Stalin's fabricated 'doctor's plot'. Typed D.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p.], 1947, discussing the most efficient way to confiscate German medical equipment as reparations after World War II. In part: '...Our representative in Berlin...comrade SHCHEKIN, is assembling the equipment allocated for our constructions from the reparations account from Germany... SHCHEKIN should receive the equipment he selects on the spot, pack it and send it...to the address of the Kremlin sanitary unit....' Notable edgewear at right, file holes, else fine. From 1951 to 1953, at the order of Joseph Stalin, the USSR accused a group of predominantly Jewish doctors from Moscow of conspiring to assassinate Soviet leaders. This was later accompanied by publications of antisemitic character in the media, which talked about the threats of Zionism and condemned people with Jewish surnames. Many doctors, both Jews and non-Jews, were dismissed from their jobs, arrested and tortured to produce admissions. The deportation of the entire Jewish population of the Soviet Union to the Gulag was intended to follow, though weeks after Stalin's death, the new Soviet leadership admitted a lack of evidence and the case was dropped. Soon after, it was declared to have been entirely fabricated.
