625. VICKSBURG PAROLE Very rare Vicksburg parole given to a captured Confederate, 1p. oblong 8vo., Vicksburg, July 4, 1863, the day the city was surrendered by Gen. John S. Pemberton!. The parole, likely field-printed, is issued to Major William F. Haines and reads in part: "...[Haines] being a Prisoner of War, in the hands of the United States Forces, in virtue of the capitulation of the City of Vicksburg and its Garrison...on the 4^th day of July, 1863 do, in pursuance of the terms of said capitulation...[promise] I will not take up arms again against the United States, nor serve in any military...held by the Confederate States......nor as guard of prisons, deports or stores...until duly exchanged..."
