Description:

781. MARTIN VAN BUREN (1782-1862) Eighth President of the United States, Secretary of State and a close ally of Andrew Jackson. Good content D.S. "M. Van Buren", 2pp. legal folio, [Albany], July 22, 1831, a "Bond of Indemnity" in which Van Buren attests that he is indebted to one Charles Whiting in the amount of $200.00. The document continues, apparently indicating that Whiting had purchased land sold at auction by relative Tobias Van Buren on behalf of creditors (including Martin), and this bond indemnifies Whiting for any charges which may be levied against him by the sheriff for legal costs. Signed by Van Buren at conclusion, also signed by a "Jn. Van Buren", possibly his son. Very good. $300-400
