VALLEY FORGE QUARTERMASTER GENERAL COL. JOHN COX
JOHN COX (1741 - 1827) Colonel and Assistant Quartermaster General at Valley Forge in 1778, Cox was also a Philadelphia merchant and owned Batsto Furnace which produced munitions for the Continental army. War-date A.L.S., 4pp.legal folio, Bloomsbury, Sep. 27, 1779 to his superior, Gen. NATHANIEL GREENE who dockets the letter. Cox describes his debilitated medical condition: "...tho' I have been well nursed since my arrival, I am very far from being well yet..." He continues: "...I have ordered stabling for 150 horses to be immediately provided at Burlington...the Forage that would be consumed would in no shape interfere either with Philadelphia or this Post...I could procure large supplies of grain if he had the cash to buy it...his present prospect of a supply of cash is but dull, as it is not in Mr. Pettits power to furnish the sum...I intend paying Batsto a visit...furnishing you with a state of our affairs...best compliments to you & Mrs. Greene...compliments wait on Genl. Knox..." Greene dockets the letter simply: "John Cox Sept. 27th 1779" Second page bears two marginal chips, tiny hole at top margin of first page, else very good.
