Description:

V1 FLYING BOMB NOSE CONE
An excellent relic from one of the most ingenious and terrifying weapons of World War II, the nose cone from a German V-1 flying bomb, one of the first "cruise missiles" in active service, and the only pulsejet-powered aircraft to ever see production. The nose cone is constructed of blue-green painted aluminum, and is riveted to a small section of the main body of the aircraft, total dimensions approx. 5 1/4" x 3 1/2" dia. The tip is mounted with a 7 3/4" allow windmill, marked "I/1"used to monitor the weapon''s flight distance after launch. Small remnants of the black bakelite housing which would have covered the central section of the windmill; the entire windmill assembly would have served as a pressure trigger, causing the bomb to detonate upon a nose-first impact with the ground. Two strands of yellow wire fitted within the cone would have carried the signal from the windmill, while a steel plunger would have triggered the warhead. The piece is in good excavated condition, and was purchased by our consignor from relic hunters in England, the target of some 9,521 V-1 attacks.
