USS WASATCH SEAMAN'S GROUPING
Good U.S. Navy grouping from Seaman Burton R. Sirkis who served aboard the USS WASATCH. Included is a fine American World War II M1 helmet, fixed bale with a front seam and stainless steel rim, green sand-finish outer paint, liner and chinstrap in excellent condition; a photograph album with two ribbon bars and a service medals on the cover with an additional group of loose photographs, about 250 images in all, about half of interest showing invasion activity at Leyte Gulf, a burial at sea, natives in the Philippines and at Borneo, battle damage, the WASATCH, etc.; 14 various newsletters printed aboard the ship offering news on landing at Luzon and Leyte, as well as news from the other theaters of war; approx. 20 'Plan of the Day' schedules for the vessel; a small cloth Japanese national flag (damaged), two makers' metal plates and a 5 x 2 in. section of green painted aluminum labeled: Jap 0 [Zero] Luzon Jan. 10 1945'; Sirkis'; badge as Wasatch Master at Arms (oxidized), the cruise book for the WASATCH, 1944-45; and a 48-star American flag, individually sewn stripes with printed stars, 32 x 56, made by 'Annin', possibly flown aboard the vessel. USS WASATCH (AGC-9) was a Mount McKinley-class amphibious force command ship. She was designed as a cargo ship and converted into an amphibious force flagship, a floating command post with advanced communications equipment and extensive combat information spaces to be used by the amphibious forces commander and landing force commander during large-scale operations. On 7 September 1945, Rear Admiral Daniel E. Barbey, who commanded Task Force 76, embarked in Wasatch; and the ship got underway for Aitape. WASATCH served as the nerve center for the landings at Leyte, directing air and sea assets to counter-attack Japanese defensive efforts.
