Description:

Great pair of photograph albums compiled by a sailor serving aboard the Pearl Harbor attack veteran USS TENNESSEE in the mid-to-late 1920's, just a few years after the warship's commissioning. The albums, each 11 x 8 in. with leather covers bearing images of the ship, include photographs of the sailor, multiple images of the TENNESSEE at sea and at anchor, guns firing and torpedoes launching, drydock, officers, fellow crewmen, thirty 5 x 7 in. commercial photos of Hawaiian scenes including the fleet at anchor, nine great 5 x 7 in. photos of an equatorial crossing "baptism", photos of Sydney, Auckland, and Samoa, postcard photographs of Panama and the Panama Canal, wrecked American warships, commercial images of other battleships, including the ARIZONA, IDAHO, PENNSYLVANIA, NEVADA, and OKLAHOMA, and much more. Also included are USS TENNESSEE menus from Memorial Day and Fourth of July dinners in 1925, and the front page of the June 6, 1925 shipboard newspaper "The Tennessee Tar". Album covers are heavily worn, photos themselves are very good to fine. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, the TENNESSEE was tied up along Battleship Row and was soon surrounded by sinking or heavily damaged battleships, including the ARIZONA. TENNESSEE narrowly escaped the same fate as ARIZONA, saved only by the malfunctioning of the same type of bombs dropped upon her. She would later serve with distinction throughout the South Pacific.
