Description:

(1904-1989) U.S. Navy rear admiral who, as a lieutenant, commanded the ill-fated submarine USS SQUALUS, and was one of 33 men rescued from her wreck via diving chamber after she sank during sea trials. An interesting signed item, a well-illustrated program for the "Squalus Memorial Benefit Concert" held at Little Boar's Head, New Hampshire on July 30, 1939, two months after the submarine's sinking and salvage. Naquin is introduced with a full page portrait on page eight, which he signs in black ink at lower right, adding: "Bestest-Best to Jo-Jo". The program also includes several other interesting features, including a list of those who perished in the accident and an illustration memorializing them, a group photo of the surviving crew members, a diagram of the McCann diving chamber used in their rescue, and photos and a timeline of the boat's short life. Shows minor wear and toning to the covers, else very good. Naquin would continue his career as a naval officer throughout World War II, surviving the sinking of the battleship USS CALIFORNIA during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and navigating the heavy cruiser USS NEW ORLEANS to safety after she lost her bow to a Japanese torpedo at the Battle of Tassafaronga.
