Nice grouping of ephemera surrounding the famous battleship USS NEW JERSEY. Included is a letter from CLAUDE S. SWANSON (1862–1939) American lawyer and Democratic politician, served as Governor of Virginia, U.S.Senator, and Secretary of the Navy under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a T.L.S. as Secretary of the Navy on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 15, 1938 responding to a request that the next battleship to be commissioned be named after 'New Jersey'. Swanson advises that the name will be considered once funds have been appropriated. Sold with: the printed announcement of the launching of the New Jersey, Dec. 7, 1942, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard; a commemorative postal cover issued for the launching; a veteran-signed postal cover; and a postcard depicting the first USS NEW JERSEY, (BB-16), the fourth of five Virginia-class battleships of the United States Navy. The NEW JERSEY remained in service right up until the Persian Gulf War and is now a museum ship in Camden.
