Description:

USS MERRIMACK COMMORATIVE PLAQUE
A fine historic commemorative plaque showing the famed 1862 Battle of Hampton Roads, presented as a souvenir by the association of Edison Illuminating companies. The plaque, made of brass 3.75 in. x 2.5 in., commemorates the first battle fought solely between two ironclads in, with the USS Monitor visible in the background. In the foreground is a 1.25 in. x .5 in. piece of iron taken from the wreck of the Merrimac that was pressed into the shape of the iconic ship, then attached to the brass presentation plaque by one rivet. Above the scene is the inscription ‘ASSOCIATION OF EDISON ILLUMINATING COMPANIES 44TH ANNUAL MEETING OLD POINT COMFORT OCTOBER 1-5 1928' along with the logo of the company beside the inscription. A memento of the company's 44th Annual meeting being held at 'Old' Point Comfort in Hampton Virginia, previously known as Point Comfort, this point of land overlooked the site of the famous Battle of Ironclads, which occurred near this location 66 years before. An inscription below reads ‘IRON FROM PLATING OF IRONCLAD MERRIMAC 1862'. On the reverse is the makers mark ‘MEDALLIC ART CO. N.Y.'. Fine.
