Description:

Fine postwar souvenir flag, 41 1/2" x 28 1/2" a faithful recreation of the "kill" flag of the U.S. Navy submarine USS JACK, which sank 76,687 tons of Japanese shipping over the course of nine patrols. The flag was undoubtedly crafted by one of her crew or a close associate for display or presentation at a reunion immediately post-war. It bears the hand-painted mascot of the boat - her namesake fish wearing a sailor's cap, sweater, and boxing gloves, while smoking a cigar, over the boat's name in white paint, all on a red field. At right appear 30 individually-sewn cloth Japanese flags, along with two black balls bearing the numeral "8", possibly representing mine-laying missions. Seven fabric ribbon bars appear at top left, signifying the Navy Cross, Navy Commendation Medal, and five others. Most interestingly, a small fabric parachute symbol is sewn to the right of the mascot, signifying her role as a "lifeguard" for downed U.S. airmen off the coast of Japan during her final patrols. The flag is backed with white linen, folded over to the front and sewn to form a hoist, with brass grommet at top and bottom. Shows appreciable soiling overall, most noticeable in the white areas, else very good.
