Description:

USS INDIANAPOLIS CREW
A photograph of the famous USS Indianapolis, 8 x 10 in., b/w, depicting the doomed vessel at sea, signed by an amazing collection of approx. 80 sailors who survived the tragic sinking following her torpedoing by a Japanese submarine. Very fine condition. The Indianapolis won ten battle stars for its participation in some of the most important battles of the Pacific. She was in the Philippine Sea when attacked and sunk by a Japanese submarine on July 30th, 1945, after delivering critical parts for the first atomic bomb, Little Boy, to the air base at Tinan. About 300 of the 1,196 men on board died in the attack. The rest of the crew, 880 men, floated in the water without lifeboats until the rescue was completed four days later. 321 crewmen came out of the water alive, with 317 ultimately surviving.
