Description:

USS ENTERPRISE 'BURIAL FLAG'
A very large 48-star American flag, 60 x 114 in., was manufactured between 1912-1959, the period between the admission to the Union of Arizona and Alaska. The left margin is canvas with two metal grommets at the corners. There is a stamp on the canvas that reads 'USS Enterprise Burial Flag 1945.' Scattered stains, yet overall good condition. Such burial flags are used when a 'Burial at Sea' service was held aboard a U.S. naval vessel for military veterans, civilian marine personnel, or their dependent family members. Following the conclusion of the war, the USS Enterprise was deemed surplus for the needs of America's navy. She entered the New York Shipyard on 18 January 1946 for deactivation and was decommissioned on 17 February 1947. Subsequent attempts were made at preserving the ship as a museum or memorial, but fund-raising efforts failed to raise enough money to buy the vessel from the Navy, and Enterprise was sold on 1 July 1958 to the Lipsett Corporation of New York City for scrapping at Kearny, New Jersey.
