Description:

UNIQUE CONCENTRATION CAMP FOLK ART
A most bizarre relic attributed to a concentration camp inmate or staff member, a 15" x 20" shadowbox "folk art" presentation of the German nation eagle, swastika and wreath painstakingly composed of thousands of...colored beetles. The many hundreds or thousands of brown, green, blue and tan beetles have been individually pinned to a paper-covered wood surface in order to create the symbol of Nazi Germany, and bears the addition of six small flowered branches, also made of insects. The eagle bears a glass eye, yellow beak, and actual bird claws painted yellow and likewise pinned to the board. The entire assemblage is encased in a rather crude homemade case with hooks on either side allowing the glass cover to be removed if desired. Our consignor advises that this piece was a wartime souvenir brought home by an American soldier who stated that it originated from a "concentration camp near Liepzig". Camps in that area included Leipzig-Thekla, a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp and Gasag-Liepzig, a forced labor camp for women. This is certainly one of the "creepiest" relics we've encountered, and we can only imagine a prisoner making it to please a guard or a bored staffer creating this in his spare time.
