Description:

UNION VETERAN LEGION MEDAL FOR A GETTYSBURG VETERAN
Very rare three-part member's medal issued by the Union Veteran Legion, 3 in. long overall, bearing in the center a Civil War Campaign Medal rim-marked: 'M. No. 2907', the 1905 medal displaying 'THE CIVIL WAR 1861-1865' with laurel wreaths on the reverse, with a bust of Lincoln on the obverse surrounded by the quote: 'WITH MALICE TOWARD NONE WITH CHARITY FOR ALL'. To one side the medal has also been engraved 'GETTYSBURG'. Suspended beneath the medal is a smaller shield-shaped emblem of the U.V.L. with stars and the dates: '1861 1865'. At top is a rectangular plate engraved with the member's name: 'Chas. F. McKenna Co. E 155th Pa. Vol.' Lightly tarnished, else very good to fine. Likely custom made and unique. McKenna enlisted as a 16 year old on Aug. 22, 1862 and served until June 2, 1865, serving later in his term as Assistant to the Adjutant General, 5th Corps Headquarters. The 155th Pa. saw action in most of the greatest battles in the east, including Chancellorsville, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg.
