Description:

Good grouping of three letters from Union soldier Luther G. Miller to his wife, Ellen, includes: A.L.S. on patriotic letterhead, depicting a Union soldier embracing a crying girl with a poem captioned"THE GIRL I LEFT BEHIND ME", 4pp. 8vo., Lexington, Oct. 30, 1862, detailing circulating rumors of a potential armistice, in part:"...We have a rumor in camp...that there is an armistice for 60 days and we are ordered not to load nor fire a gun until further Orders. I think the fiting is about played out and I havt Killed a sesesh...so keep up good courage and it wont be long till I am home..." We could not find evidence of this armistice ever taking place, yet given the course of the war, it is quite unlikely. WITH: A.L.S. on patriotic letterhead, depicting a standing George Washington motioning towards an American flag and a marble pillar labeled"THE CONSTITUTION AND LAWS", 4pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], asking his wife to write more, adding:"...I could think of more to tell you in a half an hour than I could write in a week...If I thought it would be three years before I could see you I would give up now..." WITH: A.L.S. on patriotic letterhead, depicting red-colored"UNION" surrounded by foliage, 3pp. 8vo., Camp Hooker, Oct. 1, [n.y.], in part:"...Lime Allen is sick And if we don't take our artillery I think I will have to drive his team...we are heading down to seceshdom for certain but you must not worry...". Much more content in all three letters. Very good to fine overall.
