Description:

Union soldier's letter on patriotic letterhead, with a full-color image of the battle between the Monitor and Merrimac, 4pp. 8vo., Camp Briggs, Feb. 25, [n.y., ca. 1863-1865], from an unknown Union soldier to his mother. In part: ...I was detailed to help escort a squad of recruits to Fort Corcoran, one of the forts in defense of Washington. Started at one o'clock and got back to camp about 9 at night...You wanted to know how Ad Handley managed to get so much money. There is a great many ways of getting money in this fort...some honorable and others are not. And others compromise a man's [dignity] as a soldier. One of the methods by which he procures money could not in any way have its approval of my conscience. But it is not my duty to reprove my comrades to their friends at home...individuals who do so invariably lose their standing in the company...We're having warm and pleasant weather and very dry...which will tend to facilitate the movement of our troops. Looking anxiously forward for the conclusion of this war...that we are to be released from the dog's life ˜or military life'. Very good.
