Attly. writes a friend: there are fifteen batteries in this camp at present. some of them have been ordered to the field... lost two men since we have been here by grim death... a great deal of sickness... we shall go with Burnside... Old Burnside is determined to have New England boys... men are all out packing the caissons with ammunition. he signs Jeff Davis , adding his real name.
