Description:

Good grouping of two letters from Union soldier Theodore B. Norris, Co. F, 116th NY Infantry, includes a good-content A.L. (unsigned) on patriotic letterhead, showing horses pulling a wagon with caption "AWAY DOWN SOUTH IN DIXIE", 4pp. 8vo., Camp Canaan, Dec. 25, 1862, writing of the soldiers' Christmas Day shenanigans, in part: "...You have seen pictures of regiments dressed in the worst possible and grotesque costumes...some of the men with only their pants and shirt on with hard tack stuck on all over their back. You cannot think of any dress or position that they did not get them selves into...The men are all the time hurrahing every time that they can catch a commissioned officer doing the least thing that is wrong. They slap him into the guard house...They are going to trap the niggers and have them all in the guard house...if a nigger is good enough to cook for them they can associate with them cant they?..." Norris also talks about the many experiences he has had while in the Army, in part: "...Perhaps you think that the picture at the head of this letter is a kind of fancy concern but many a time in Baltimore I saw the original...everything is perfect...If I had not enlisted I never should have seen...an ocean trip in the steamer Atlantic or a railroad ride from Buffalo to Baltimore nor...seen rebel prisoners with ball and chain on their legs..." Very good. WITH: A.L.S. on patriotic letterhead, bearing a red, white and blue shield with the message "THE UNION FOR EVER", 4pp. 8vo., March 14, 1863, Camp Banks, Baton Rouge, mentioning the grand reviews of the camp's troops by Major General Nathaniel Banks, Commodore David Farragut, and General Andrews. Some spots, else very good.
