Description:

Prophetic Union soldier's letter on patriotic letterhead, with two pages bearing tri-color vignettes of the battle between the Monitor and Merrimack, 8pp. 8vo., Lancester, KY, May 18, 1863, from Union private Christopher Pierce, Co. D., 7th RI Infantry, to his wife. In part: ...I see so many of my brave comrades fall on the battlefield and by the hands of Desire I am yet spared...may God keep you in his hands and great to hear your prayers...do pray for peace to come so I can come to you and receive that kiss that you spoke about...my Desire is that the day is not far distant when I can come back to you...I will try to meet you if not in this world...I can meet you in heaven...We may have to move tomorrow for we are under marching orders. We expect to move any day...to Nicholsville about 22 miles further into Kentucky...we are the last reserve that is in Kentucky but we are but two regs march from the main body of the army... Five months before this letter was written, Christopher Pierce had been injured in the Battle of Fredericksburg, and two months after the letter was sent, Pierce died on July 9, 1863 at Milldale, MS from unknown causes. Very good.
