Description:

Good grouping of two letters from Union soldier Theodore B. Norris, Co. F, 116th NY Infantry, includes a good-content A.L.S., 2pp. large 4to., Fort Williams, Aug. 12, [1863], sent to his parents from Convalescent Hospital three months after Norris had been injured in battle. In part: '...I went to see Dr. Hutchins to night and he wants me to let him cut it out in the morning but I shall object...he says the ball is in the antrem...around the eye somewhere...I do not know what my prospects are for the future...I do not wish to be a poor coot all the days of my life...I think that prospects for a discharge are quite good...'. Later that day, Norris adds onto the letter, in part: 'I can get no discharge...an order has been issued that no more discharges will be issued...' Some paper loss to top-left corner and minor spots of staining, else very good. WITH: A.L.S, 2pp. folio, [New Orleans, 1963], bearing mostly routine content, yet notably mentions the fall of Vicksburg and the start of Union conscription, in part: '...I am in hopes that Uncle Sam will not falter in this Conscription business now that he has commenced it - it should have been done a year ago...What can Dr. Lynde do about getting me a furlough when I do not want one? A furlough is a fool in this country...' Generally worn, with uneven toning and numerous tears and stains, estimated accordingly.
