Lot of five letters from Union soldiers with mostly routine content on patriotic letterheads, includes: a letter from J.W. Smith to his mother and sister, 4pp. 8vo., Camp Seuses [?], Aug. 25, 1861, with letterhead showing a strong dog standing guard over"Washington" as a small dog with a Confederate hat recoils away, captioned"Why don't you take it?" In part:"...How do you like the picture on this sheet? We will show them why they don't take it when we get down there..."; a letter from Rufus Ridrill [?] to Miss A. J. Mott, 3pp. 8vo., Bridgeport, MA, July 3, 1864, with red-and-blue letterhead depicting"Desperate Bayonet Charge at Battle of Winchester, March 23, led by Gen. Tyler", handwriting largely illegible; a letter from S.C. Allen, Co. B, NY 93rd Division, to his mother and sister, 4pp. 8vo.,"Camp Winfield Scott Near York Town, VA", Apr. 24, 1862, with full-color letterhead, depicting a Union sailor holding a sword and American flag while standing on an anchor, in part:"...We get paid the first of May...if we live, it will come and I hope the Lord will spare our lives..."; a letter from H.D. and H.C. Bowls to friends and family, 4pp. 8vo., Pleasant Hill, IA, July 12, [n.y.], with blind-embossed letterhead depicting George Washington surrounded by laurels, in part:"...we in the coldest place in Iowa...it is colder here than in Minnesota..."; and a letter from Northern photographer M. U. Mitchell to a family member, 4pp. 8vo., Washington D.C., Aug. 17, 1862, on very detailed stationary featuring uniformed soldier standing on the State of Massachusetts, in part:"... a Company goes tramp, tramp by the window where I am writing this. Enfield rifles on their shoulders...I saw a new regiment with their muskets glittering in the sun...A thousand men newly equipped with the real war implements is a grand sight...". Overall very good. Should be seen.
