Soldier's letter from George L. Hersum, Corporal in Company A, 5th New Hampshire Vols. Infantry, 2pp. 8vo., Springfield, VA, Mar. 5, 1862, on rare, vibrant Rhode Island patriotic Union letterhead to his wife, in part: ‘…We went on Picket last Friday and was to go back to Camp yesterday but yesterday morning we had orders to march to Springfield Stashion to gard a Bridg on the Orange & Alexandria R.R. witch our forces are reparing the Bridg was Burned by the Rebels some time ago there is two other Regt. with us. Springfield is a small stashion about 8 miles from Alexandria we some expect not to go back to our old Camp again I here that one holl division is to move out here and Encamp if so we are so much securer to Bool Run witch will be taken soon if they do not surrander whitch I think they will do before they will risk an Engagement if they doesn't surrender there will be an Awfull battle…'. Very slight smearing to a few characters, otherwise boldly penned and very good. The 5th N.H. Vols. was involved in 23 engagements, including the Siege of Petersburg, Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor and Gettysburg. Hersum himself would be wounded in action at Antietam, Sept. 17, 1862.
